Below are the available scholarships for the KHS Class of 2022


  Please read all directions carefully as failure to complete applications correctly, and by the deadline, may result in your application not being considered for the scholarship.  


You will need to complete the FAFSA  or WASFA starting October 1, 2021 in order to be eligible for ANY Financial Aid, regardless of household income.

Scholarships are turned in via the Scholarships Google Classroom or by the method listed on the application.  Join today!

Kelso Public Schools Foundation

The Kelso Public Schools Foundation offers multiple scholarships to Kelso High School graduating seniors.  Descriptions for awards are listed below as a preview. 

Starting in 2021-22, KPSF will be using Kaleidoscope for it's application process.  You must create a profile in order to access and complete applications.

DUE: APRIL 15, 2022


Veryl & Larry Anderson

Established by alumni and community advocates Veryl and Larry Anderson.  Awarded to a student pursuing a degree in Music or Music Education with a 3.0 GPA or higher.

Sharon Bergman

Established by Sharon Roberts Bergman, a '61 graduate of KHS.  Two awards will be given (one male/one female student) to students in good academic standing, involved in school activities, and who are active with community service.

Judy & Chuck Bailey

Established in the name of Judy and Chuck Bailey.  Special consideration will be given to a student that has worked while maintaining a 2.5 or higher GPA in high school.  Preferred interest in a non-profit type of career.

Baker Family

Established by the Jim Baker family to recognize graduating seniors.  For students who plan to attend LCC or a two-year program (or to begin there and continue at a four -year institution).  3.0 GPA or above.


Established by a 2011 KHS graduate, and recipient of a Kelso Foundation scholarship, who felt strongly about "paying it forward".  Awarded to a stduent entering a field of study in STEM (science, technology, engineering, math), is well rounded (athletics, school clubs, work), and has a 3.2 GPA or higher. 

E.Lucille Calhoun

Established by the estate of Lucy Calhoun, a beloved KHS teacher for 35+ years.  For students interested in entering a field of study in child development, nutrition, culinary arts, or education.  3.0 GPA or above.

Ruth & Marion Clark

Established by the Clark family honoring Dr. Marion Clark in his love of horticulture & music.  Interest in entering the field of study of music or horticulture. 3.0 GPA or higher.

Terri Clary

Established by Jim Clary in honor of his wife Terri, a KHS alumni, in lieu of a Christmas gift.  Given to a female in good academic standing who is involved in school activities and community service.

Class of '45- Don & Vivian Ames

The Ames family continues this scholarship that originated with the Class of '45 in honor of Don's passion in vocational and technical education.  The award will go to a student with plans to attend community college, vocational or tech school, with plans to enter a trade (ie mechanics, truck driving, instrumentation, welding, firefighting.)

Class of '45- Vronia Bailey

Established as a memorial by the class of '45 in honor of her high school involvement.  School activities and community service will be considered.  Preference to vocational or technical interests (culinary arts, nursing, clerical, computers, early childhood education).

Class of '45- Willard Chinn

Established by the class of '45 and named for Willard Chinn, honoring his involvement during their high school years.  Consideration given for school activities and community service, preference to students interested in physical science or medicine.

Class of '45- Colleene Cottenoir Armstrong

Colleene's passion for music and performing arts continue under her guidance in the presentation of this scholarship.  Applicants will be considered based on school activities and community involvement with preference given to students interested in studying music or the performing arts.

Class of '45- Tommy Jabusch

Established by the class of '45 in honor of Tommy's years of dedication as a teacher with physical impairments.  Award will be given to a student seeking a degree in education who distinguishes themselves despite a physical impairment or handicap.   School activities will be considered.  (*Note- if no candidate qualifies for the physical impairment or handicap criteria, consideration will be given to the best candidate seeking to be a teacher.

Class of '45- Al Laakso

Established by the class of '45 in memorial of Al's athletic and leadership abilities.  Looking for leaders in school who participated in one or more sport during high school.  3.0 or higher GPA.

Class of '45- Alan St.Onge

Memorial scholarship established by the class of '45 in honor of Alan's football triumphs.  Considering students with an interest in the arts who have demonstrated athletic ability.

Class of '48- Roy Dennis

In Memory of Roy Dennis, principal of the Class of '48.  Applicants should be students continuing their education at a college or vocational program.

Class of '52

Established by the Class of '52 to recognize a working student.  GPA 2.5-3.0.  Preference given to a student who has worked outside the home during high school.

Class of '45- Dan Wagster Hilander Hall of Fame/Kaiser Permanente

Established by Kaiser Permanente in honor of Dan Wagster's retirement.  Dan was a graduate of the Class of '45 and was Sr. Vice President of Kaiser Permanente Health/Hospitals.  Criteria: High academic achievement, excels in athletics and/or arts, participation in extracurricular activities (school and community), demonstrates leadership and citizenship.

Class of '58- Mike Lyons

Established by the Class of '58 in memory of classmate Mike Lyons who died of injuries sustained in football during his senior year at Kelso High School.  Students must have high personal standards and a "Christian attitude" toward others.

Maurice & Betty Cummings

Established by family and friends- Maurice was a Class of '34 graduate and Betty was a long-time employee of the Kelso School District as an Instructional Assistant.  Preference to students who have participated on a varsity basketball team.  3.0 GPA or higher/commitment to academics.

Justin DeRosier Criminal Justice Scholarship

Established by the family of Justin DeRosier, a local deputy that lost his life while protecting our community.  Applicants will be considered with a 2.8 GPA or higher who wish to pursue a career in criminal justice.

Robert Dykstra (Class of '54)

Established by Robert in an effort to support students of Kelso High and their interest in furthering their education.  Average GPA.

Jack Elms

Teacher, coach, principal, and district financial officer for many years.  Served as treasurer and financial wizard for the foundation in its beginning years- instrumental in moving the board to the high level of functionality it is today.  Preference given to former Huntington Middle School Students.

Lori Annette Hamm Memorial

Established by the family in memory of their daughter, Lori, a 1988 graduate who died in the summer of 2006.  Lori was injured in an auto accident, Spring of '88, and through hard work and effort, overcame those injuries to graduate from KHS in December 1988 and LCC later on.  Preference given to students who have overcome a hardship to graduate.  Consideration given to citizenship, school spirit, and willingness to help others.

Julia Hiatt

Established by the family of Julia Hiatt to a graduating senior who has made KHS a better place for their peers.  Students should have a 3.0 or higher GPA.

Virgil Hopkins

This endowed scholarship was established by the estate of Virgil Hopkins, a former KHS English, Foreign Language, and Choral Music instructor.  Award given to a student interested in entering the field of English, Foreign Language, or vocal music.

Kevin Hanks Memorial Cross Country Scholarship

Established by family and friends of Kevin who was a 1997 KHS graduate and cross country competitor.  Students must hold themselves to a high academic standard.


Established by the staff of Huntington Middle School in honor of Elaine Cockrell's retirement.  The Cockrell family has maintained this scholarship in her honor.  Applicants should have attended Huntington at least 3 years, preference given to Huntington Promise recipients.

Ron & Dot Joslin Vocational

Established by Ron and Dot Joslin, retired Kelso School District instructors.  Ron specialized in music and fine arts and Dot specialized in math and science.  Applicants should be planning on attending vocational training and have a 2.5 GPA or higher.

Jabusch Family Memorial

Established in memory of Susan Jabusch Frotjohn, Roy Jabusch, Alice Jabusch, Mike Jabusch, Lory Jabusch Hendricks and all future Jabusch descendant memorials.  Award given to a student planning to attend a four-year college, community college, trade/business school who lives in Rose Valley or regularly attends RV Friends Church, Sunday School, or Youth Group.  Quality of application considered.

Ron & Dot Joslin Math or Science

Established by Ron and Dot Joslin, retired Kelso School District instructors.  Ron specialized in music and fine arts and Dot specialized in math and science.  Applicants should be planning on pursuing a Math or Science degree and have a 3.0 GPA or higher.

Ron & Dot Joslin Fine & Performing Art

Established by Ron and Dot Joslin, retired Kelso School District instructors.  Ron specialized in music and fine arts and Dot specialized in math and science.  Applicants should be planning on pursing a career in Fine/Performing Arts and have a 3.0 GPA or higher.

Vern King

Established by family and friends to honor Vern's contribution as teacher/administrator to the education of students in Kelso (especially Barnes Elementary).  Preference given to a Barnes Elementary School student.

Rosemary Kingsley

Established as a memorial by the Kingsley family.  Rose worked many years as a para educator at Beacon Hill Elementary.  Students must have interest in attending community college, university or vocational/technical training.  Preference to a student that attended Beacon Hill Elementary at least two years.

Kiwanis- Dr. Herron Memorial

Established by Kelso Kiwanis in memory of Dr. Thomas Herron, who practiced osteopathic medicine in Kelso.  Open criteria- applicants will be judged on qualify of application.

Charles (Chuck) & Anita Klawitter

Established in memory of Chuck and Anita who were Kelso alumni and community advocates.  Award to a student planning to attend LCC for a vocational program.

Living Educator- Kathy Williamson

Established by the KPSF in honor of a living Kelso School District educator.  Open to students pursuing a degree in teaching.

Kate Long

Established by the estate of Kate Long, beloved teacher who taught Social Studies and Contemporary World Problems for over 30 years at KHS.  The scholarship is renewable for up to 3 years (amount may vary).  Award goes to students interested in international relations, politics, history, or liberal arts.

Marlene Worley Laufman

Established in her memory by Marlene's family.  Marlene graduated from KHS in '56 as a top student and a Scotty majorette.  Preference to applicants with an interest in teaching or STEM (Science, technology, engineering, or math).

Ernestine Mathis

Established in memorium by the niece and family of Ernestine Mathis.  Awarded to a student interested in the field of Art or Computer Technology.

McCool Living Trust- Architecture/Engineering/


Rich McCool, graduate of the Class of '57, established this scholarship to honor his years in the construction business.  Available to students interested in construction, architecture or engineering.

McCool Living Trust- Medical

Rich McCool, graduate of the Class of '57, established this scholarship to honor his years in the construction business.  Available to students interested in a career in the medical field who have a 2.75 GPA or higher.

Lois Moore

Established in 1994 by Maxwell and Lois Moore.  Max was a local business owner and Lois served on the Kelso School Board for a number of years.  Two awards will be given to students pursuing careers in education.

Max Moore

Established in 1994 by Maxwell and Lois Moore.  Max was a local business owner and Lois served on the Kelso School Board for a number of years.  Two awards will be given to students pursuing vocational/professional degrees.

Gordon & Pauline Murphy

Established by the family of Gordon and Pauline Murphy, Kelso community activists and school patrons.  Special consideration given to students who attended Wallace Elementary.

Roy Parsons Memorial

Established by friends and family of long-time school board member Roy Parsons.  For students with a 3-3.75 GPA who plan to attend college or trade school OR enroll in an apprenticeship program.

Walt & Marty Piper

Established by the Piper family honoring their contributions to the culture and education of Kelso stduents.  Walt taught math and coached at KHS for many years.  Mary was a great supporter of the education and activities of Kelso students.  GPA 2.5=3.3.

Rose Valley PTO

Established by the Rose Valley PTO honoring a student that attended Rose Valley Elementary.

Mike & Linda Saville

Established in 1983 by Mike Saville in memory of his wife Linda.  The name was changed by the family in 2013 in memory of their parents to the Mike and Linda Saville Scholarship.  Applicants must be entering a health-related field.

Schleif Family

Six scholarships established by Gil Schleif, former KSD Assistant Superintendent.  Three will be given in the name of Patricia Eddy (Daughter of Gil/Ruth Schleif) and three in the name of Gil's wife, Ruth.  Open criteria.

Betty Schloss

Established by family and friends at Butler Acres Elementary in memory of her years of teaching in Kelso School District.  For students pursuing a degree in teaching.

Emmett & Opal Schroeder

Established by the family and friends in memory of "Mutt" Schroeder- teacher, coach, administrator, and friend of the Kelso community.  Applicant must be an athlete from a local family.  Considered based on high academic achievement, excellent citizenship, and exhibition of hard work with seriousness of purpose.

Chuck Stover (Class of '37)

Established by the estate of Chuck Stover, an advocate of the KPSF and Kelso High Scholarships.  Four awards given based on quality of application- open criteria.

Frieda Walworth- Wallace Elementary

Established by the Wallace staff and continued by the Walworth family in memory of Frieda Walworth- a Wallace school volunteer.  Preference given to Wallace Elementary School students.

Larry & Darlene Wilgus (Class of '59)

Established by Larry Wilgus- lifetime Kelso Resident and long time employee of the Kelso School District.  This scholarship is intended for students with a 2.5 to 3.5 GPA that have attended KHS for all four years of high school.  Preference to students that are not likely to receive other scholarships.

Vandecar Family

Established by the Vandecar family in 2014 in memroy of their parents.  3.0 GPA or higher with determination to further education.

Randy & Linda Zmrhal

Established in 2014 by Randy and Linda Zmrhal to honor a student graduating from KHS.  Applicant must be interested in studying computer information systems/computer science in a college of business or engineering.  GPA 3.1 or above.  Preference given to a Rose Valley student.

Kelso Community Scholarships


Kelso High School facilitates the scholarship process for our generous community donors.  These scholarship applications will be available here as we receive the information.  For more information, contact Mrs. Dalton in the counseling center.

Altrusa International- Technical Education at LCC

$1000 to students enrolling at Lower Columbia College during the 2022-23 school year in a two-year technical program in the trades, manufacturing, or industrial fields.  Students who plan to work in Cowlitz County are preferred applicants.  Preference also given to family income below $80,000

Kaiser Permanente Health Care Career Scholarship

Scholarships in the amount of $2000, $5000, or $10000 are awarded to college-bound high school seniors from the Northwest area.  Students must have a 2.5 GPA, plans to pursue an education/career in the human health care field, and plans to enroll in a program for the Fall of 2019..  Considerations are academics, activities, commitment to health care, diversity, character, and economic/social disadvantage.

Altrusa International Scholarship

$1400, renewable to students attending Lower Columbia College.  Preference is given to students with family incomes below $80,000.

$1000 to a female student who has attended Lower Columbia College.  Student must have an interest in a science field and have applied to further her education at a four year college or university.

PSE of Kelso Chapter #1

Two $500 scholarships to seniors who are children or grandchildren of a Public School Employees of Kelso, Chapter #1 Union member.  Selection is based on financial need, academics, and community service.

Multiple scholarships available to residents of Cowlitz County.

Red Canoe Credit Union

Awarding seven $4,000 scholarships to its members- 3.0 cumulative GPA or higher, plan to enroll in a an accredited college or vocational school full time (12+ hours) for the upcoming academic year.

Downtown Quarterbacks Scholarship (DTQ)

5 awards available to students who have participated in football at Kelso High School.  Students must be in good academic standing and contribute to their community.

Kelso Recreation Council

4 awards to students who demonstrated scholarship and have participated in athletics and/or activities.

Carrolls Elementary PTO

(1) $1,000 scholarship to a graduating senior that attended Carrolls Elementary for 2 years.  Applicants should have a 3.0 GPA or higher.

Ryan Wolf Memorial Scholarship (Kelso Youth Baseball)

$500 in memory of Ryan Wolf- a 9 year old child who passed away in an accident.  To qualify, you must have played or volunteered at least one baseball season with Kelso Youth Baseball.  Student must be a KHS senior, 2.5 GPA or higher, planning to attend college or trade school.

Kelso Cheer Boosters

(2) $500 scholarship to a graduating senior that actively cheered in at least 2 complete seasons (they do not need to be consecutive).  Must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and pursuing post-high school education in the fall after graduation.

Beta Sigma Phi Health Field Memorial Scholarship

$1000 scholarship to a a resident of Cowlitz, Wahkiakum and Columbia counties who are pursuing a degree in a health field.  Applicants must show financial need and intention to reach their health field goal.

Kelso Rotary Vocational Scholarship

Available to seniors from Kelso and Castle Rock High Schools planning to attend a full-time vocational or technical program (including 2-year community college programs).  Four year degree programs are not eligible.

Kelso Rotary Merit Scholarship

Open to all graduating seniors from Kelso and Castle Rock High Schools who are planning to attend a college or university full-time.

Lower Columbia School Retirees Association

(3) $1000 scholarships to Cowlitz-Wahkiakum area graduating seniors, interested in a career in education (teacher, counselor, speech therapist, librarian) or seeking vocational training.   GPA 3.2 or higher required

Kelso High School Volleyball Booster Club

Up to $250 for qualifying graduating seniors who participated in Hilander Volleyball in the 2020/2021 season.

Windermere Real Estate Foundation Scholarship

 $1,000 scholarship is available to any resident of Cowlitz County planning to attend a Washington College or University full time.

GSBA Scholarship

Awards ranging up to $13,000 to LGBTQ and straight-ally students, committed to making a difference in the world.  Scholarship may be used for college, trade school, or a certificate program.

Kiwanis Key Club Scholarship

$750 to a senior that has been a member of Key Club for at least one year and on track to graduate at the end of their senior year.  Applications evaluated based on financial need, academic progress, and community/key club involvement.

Kiwanis of Kelso Longview Vocational Scholarship

$500 scholarship to area high school seniors who are on track to graduate from their high school or alternative school.  Scholarship may be used for vocational, trade, or apprentice programs.

Longview-Kelso Early Bird Lions Club

Scholarship awarded to a senior with financial need that shows promise for finishing a degree at a two or four year college/university or trade school.  No GPA requirements.  Open to all fields of study.

Friends of St. John Scholarship

Scholarships available to Cowlitz County seniors who have maintained a 3.0 GPA or higher in high school and intend to pursue a profession in the health care field.

Delta Kappa Gamma

$500 to a female student pursuing a career in education. Applicants must be planning to attend a four year college/university or community college in the fall.

Kelso Garden Club

$500 to a high school senior continuing their education at a university, college, technical college, or other educational institution in order to pursue a career in a Horticulture related field (Agriculture, Botany, Conservation, Floral Design, Forestry etc) .

Rose Valley Grange

$200 to a high school senior continuing their education at a college or vocational school in an Agriculture related field.  Preference given to Rose Valley or Carrolls Elementary alums

Longview Junior Service League

$1000 to a high school senior continuing their education at a university, college, technical college, or other educational institution.  Must be a resident of Cowlitz, Wahkiakum, or Columbia County.

Butler Acres Alumni

$500to a high school senior continuing their education in the fall.  Student must have attended Butler Acres for at least 1 school year.

Gerald Bergquist Athletic Scholarship

Scholarship to a graduating senior who has participated to in Kelso High School athletics and is continuing their education at an accredited college, university, technical or career school during the upcoming academic year.

Ethnic Support Council Scholarship

$1000 to a high school senior who is an immigrant of the child of immigrant parents currently residing in Cowlitz County OR attending a college/vocational school in Cowlitz County OR an accredited online school.

Due: April 15th, 2022

P.E.O Chapter CO Scholarship

P.E.O is a philanthropic educational organization whose goal is the support and advancement of women's education. The P.E.O. Sisterhood owns and supports Cottey College, a women's college in Nevada, MO. For more information on Cottey College visit the website at

Southern Washington Mineralogical Society

$750 annually to student residing in Cowlitz, Lewis, or Wahkiakum Counties, or Columbia County, OR. Student plans on a career in geology, earth science, environmental science, forestry, archaeology hydrology, engineering, physics, or science education. Must be officially accepted at an accredited school of higher learning and demonstrate scholastic ability.

Kelso Lions Club Scholarship

Kelso Lions Club will award 4x $1,500 scholarships. One or more scholarships may be designated for the most qualified applicant planning to attend Lower Columbia College.

Cowlitz Valley Runners Scholarship

Two $500 scholarships to high school seniors in Cowlitz County. Applicants must have participated in track and/or cross country on a high school team for at least two years.

Kelso Pop Warner College Scholarship

$500 distributed in equal increments each quarter/semester in the first year of college. Must be a high school senior graduating in 2022, participated in Cowlitz County Pop Warner Association for at least two years in tackle football or cheer programs.

American Legion Auxiliary Unit 155 Scholarship

Scholarship to an area student who is sponsored by a veteran.  Applications will be judged based on character, leadership, scholarship, basis of need, and quality of their essay.

Scottish Rite Freemasonry Scholarship

Scholarship available to a high school senior.

Kelso Education Association Scholarship

$500 scholarship to students pursuing a career in education.

Andrew J. Shields Memorial Scholarship

 Available to graduating high school seniors who have been enrolled in any accredited Fire Cadet program in southwest Washington.

Dick Streissguth Memorial Cadet Scholarship

 Available to students who have completed any Fire Cadet program in Clark, Cowlitz, or Skamania County.

Robert & Margaret Pulliam Scholarship

 Available to students graduating from Kelso High School with plans to continue their education at an accredited college, university, or technical school.

Hokulani Washington Fund Scholarship

 Available to a graduating senior with a 2.95-3.45 GPA that is planning to attend a small liberal arts college (1,500-4,000 students).  Preference given to first generation college students.

Elks Legacy Scholarship

 The Elks Legacy Scholarship is open to High School Seniors with Parents or Grandparents that have been Elks Members since April 2017.

Washington State Elks Association Vocational Grant

 For a high school senior attending community college or vocational school.

Deadline:March 1, 2021


2020 Edgar Vazquez Soccer Memorial Scholarship

 Available to a graduating senior with a 2.0 GPA or higher that has played or volunteered at least one season in Kelso Youth or High School Soccer.  Students must be pursuing an education at a college or trade school.

Dick Grabenhorst Memorial Scholarship

 $500-$1000 to a student athlete.  Awards based on Citizenship, School Involvement, and Community Service.  Minimum 2.0 GPA.

Lower Columbia Contractors Association

Awarding scholarship grants to college or vocational/technical school-bound students pursuing a career in the building industry (Engineering, Architecture, Drafting, Industrial Design, Carpentry, Electrician, Plumbing, Construction Management).

American Legion Post 155 Scholarship

Students must be legal dependent children/grandchildren of active duty United States Military and National Guard/Reservists, OR a Veteran who served and was discharged under conditions other than Dishonorable.  The applicant must be a high school senior or high school graduate to apply for the scholarship. Scholarship is for undergraduate study at an accredited institution of higher education within the United States.

John Reichert Scholar-Athlete Fund

 Available to a graduating senior with a 3.2 GPA or higher that has lettered in one or more high school sports. Preference given to a student planning to play college sports.

Hilander Dental Scholarship Application

Must be a graduating high school senior from Kelso, R.A. Long, Mark Morris or Three Rivers Christian planning on attending an accredited two or four year college or university and/or trade school, for a dental related career or any graduating high school senior that is a Hilander Dental patient. Scholarship amounts include two, $500 and one, $1000

KMR Group Foundation  

The KMR Group Foundation seeks to recognize accomplished students, invest in their potential and assist them in funding their education. Every spring, the KMR Group Foundation awards a number of scholarships to seniors graduating from high schools in Southwest Washington. The scholarships range from $1,000 to $3,500 per school year and may be renewable for up to four years, provided the recipient conforms to the requirements set forth in the award

In conjunction with the WIAA, Gesa Credit Union, the Dairy Farmers of Washington and Les Schwab Tires proudly present the Smart Choices Scholarship Program.  The 2022 Smart Choices Scholarship Program will award three (3) $5,000 scholarships and  $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors from WIAA member high schools for excellence in athletics/activities, academics, leadership and community service throughout their high school careers

Graybar Construction Trades Scholarship

$1000 Awards for a high school senior who plans to enroll full time in a nonprofit community college, technical school, trade school, vocational school or apprenticeship program to complete an associate degree, pre-apprenticeship, apprenticeship, or certificate program leading to work in the construction trades (such as carpentry, construction management, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, pipefitting, sheet metal, welding, telcom, etc.) Must have achieved a minimum grade point average (G.P.A.) of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale, 456 on the GED, or 60 on the HiSET (at least an 8 on each subtest) or equivalent scores on a state-sanctioned test

JFK "Profiles in Courage" Essay Contest

Awards ranging from $100-$10,000 to students who are selected based on their essay submission to the topic: "Describe and analyze an act of political courage by a U.S. elected official who served during or after 1917, the year John F. Kennedy was born. Include an analysis of the obstacles, risks, and consequences associated with the act. The essay may concern an issue at the local, state, national, or international level."

This scholarship will be awarded to promising high school seniors with disabilities who plan to attend a vocational or academic college and target a career in the technology industry. Cancer Unwrapped Teen Writing Contest

$1000 prize available for students who submit an essay.  Essays should be about the students' experience with cancer: either their own diagnosis or the diagnosis of a loved one or friend.  Winning essays will be well-written, compelling, and emotionally honest.
